  • Mays knew hero worship, but this response was beyond compare. The team landed in Tokyo on October 20 in a driving rain and fierce winds. Several hundred dripping wet schoolchildren screamed and waved flags as the Giants walked down the ramp, Japanese starlets handing them flowers and gifts. The players then rode in a ten-mile motorcade to their hotel with the tops up on their convertibles. The cheering fans, hunkered under umbrellas, had to stoop to peek into the windows. A deluge of ticker tape and confetti greeted the procession in the downtown business district. About halfway through, a traffic jam brought the caravan to a halt, and a lunchtime crowd, some waving “Welcome Giants” flags, began circling the tiny red sports car that carried Mays. Shouting, “Say Hey,” they clamored for autographs and began to rock the car. Panic briefly swept Mays, who kept the windows shut and the doors locked. Then policemen on motorcycles cleared a path and allowed the cars to proceed safely.
