  • Copland’s initial film projects, his scores for Of Mice and Men (1939) and Our Town (1940), involved literary sources that exemplified the same populist bent toward Americana and the common man. Yet his music always had a singular authenticity missing from the work of composers like Earl Robinson or Elie Siegmeister, who exploited American material because they had a message to deliver or because the Communist Party steered them in that direction. Much of Popular Front art was not only message ridden but smacked of condescension and insincerity, an ersatz simplicity that patronized its subjects and came off as anything but natural. This was what makes much of the work of Copland, Benton, Steinbeck, Capra, John Ford, Walker Evans, James Agee, Marc Blitzstein, Woody Guthrie, and even Virgil Thomson so refreshing.12 They made genuine art with what, for others, was little more than a political program, even a form of middle-class slumming.
