James Joyce

Author

Irish novelist and poet James Joyce is widely recognized as one of the greatest writers of the modernist avant-garde period, although this recognition did not come until long after his death. In writings such as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Dubliners, and his classic Ulysses, Joyce experimented with the use of language, extensively employed techniques like stream-of-consciousness and inner monologue, and pushed the boundaries of propriety with his explicit content. James Joyce died on January 13, 1941 in Zurich, Switzerland.

  • Roaratorio was first broadcast by WDR on October 22, 1979, and later by other radio stations in Europe, the United States, and Australia. Cage also presented all or part of it live-and-on-tape at concerts in London, Toronto, Paris, and elsewhere. He gave half of everything he received for Roaratorio to the Joyce estate, and a fourth to Fullemann, leaving a quarter to himself. Cunningham later choreographed several dances to be accompanied by parts of Roaratorio, beginning with a series of Irish jigs. Cage noted that one character in the Wake is named Merkyn Corningwham.
