  • Perhaps the most important lesson I learned was not to live in the past. This may sound like an unnecessary maxim for a professional who obviously has to keep up with the times, but one can be influenced and sometimes dominated by the past in imperceptible ways. In the early 1950s, when I succeeded my father as president of Scribners, the editorial achievements of Maxwell Perkins were still fresh in the minds of most of us. Since Perkins had been primarily interested in fiction, our editors had come to view that genre as being all-important. The result of this emphasis was that our list had become top-heavy in first novels, while our search for new books in the various categories of nonfiction—history, science, criticism, and practical arts—lagged behind.
