Christopher Columbus

Historical Figure

Christopher Columbus (c. 1451 – 20 May 1506) was a navigator, colonizer, and explorer whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean led to general European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere. With his four voyages of exploration and several attempts at establishing a settlement on the island of Hispaniola, all funded by Isabella I of Castile, he initiated the process of Spanish colonization which foreshadowed general European colonization of the "New World".

  • They never made it to Hispaniola. The account Columbus wrote—about more terrible storms they encountered, about losing three anchors, about cables bursting—would seem concocted if it were not corroborated by others. They were thrown off course and, instead of Hispaniola, they arrived on the north coast of Jamaica at the place Columbus had visited on the second voyage and had named Santa Gloria (now St. Ann’s Bay). The two remaining ships—the Capitana and the Santiago—were sinking under them, “more riddled with holes than a honeycomb.”42
