  • This layout of unr;elated (or only periodically related) texts inspired Derrida. He goes farther than Genet by using different sizes and kinds of type and several varieties of indentation. This flexibility in the mise en page permits Derrida (who begins his two-volume book with a reference to Genet’s Rembrandt essay) to interweave quotations from Genet, quotations from other writers and Derrida’s own responses. For instance, in his discussion of Bataille’s criticism of Genet’s fiction, Derrida prints in a left-hand column the relevant passage from Bataille’s book Literature and Evil, which argues that Genet’s description of Harcamone’s death in Miracle of the Rose is coldly Baroque, ‘too rich and in doubtful taste’.37 For Bataille, the cold verbalism constitutes ‘Genet’s failure’ (‘l’ Échec de Genet’). Derrida comments in smaller type in a column to the right: ‘Genet’s failure. What a title. A magic, animistic, frightened denunciation. What is the effect sought after? But the “failure”, didn’t Genet calculate it? He says it all the time, he wanted to succeed in failure.’
