Ezra Pound

Poet

Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (October 30, 1885 – November 1, 1972) was an American expatriate poet, critic and intellectual who was a major figure of the Modernist movement in the first half of the 20th century. He is generally considered the poet most responsible for defining and promoting a modernist aesthetic in poetry. The critic Hugh Kenner said of Pound upon meeting him: "I suddenly knew that I was in the presence of the center of modernism.

  • Was "the moment's surrender," to which Eliot refers with such emotion in a later passage, to the "seductive" Vivien—as Sencourt argues—or to Jean Verdenal? Or was it indeed to the Virgin, in spiritual surrender, as Helen Gardner believed? Eliot wrote in his original version of this irrevocable moment of fulfillment: "We brother, what have we given?/My friend, my friend, beating in my heart, /The awful daring of a moment's surrender/Which an age of prudence can never retract—" Clearly his partner here is masculine. The facsimile edition of the poem, which includes the cuts made by Ezra Pound, confirms the homosexual theme eliminated from the 1922 version. This is underlined by Eliot's final benediction: "Those are pearls that were his eyes. See/Still and quiet brother are you still and quiet."
