  • The fame of the exploring Bakers grew rapidly. At a subsequent lecture in Nottingham, Florence and her wifely devotion were such an attraction that the audience demanded her presence by clapping and cheering every time she was mentioned. Finally the moderator went into the audience and led Florence, blushing prettily, up onto the stage. As theater, it was brilliant. As a diversion to prevent anyone from inquiring into Florence’s past life, it was massively effective.
