Utah

United States of America

Utah is a western state of the United States. It was the 45th state admitted to the Union, on January 4, 1896. Approximately 80% of Utah's 2,736,424 people live along the Wasatch Front, centering on Salt Lake City. This leaves vast expanses of the state nearly uninhabited, making the population the sixth most urbanized in the U.S. The name "Utah" is derived from the name of the Ute tribe and means "people of the mountains. " in Ute.

  • Kane, now thirty-two and a lawyer, sported a mustache and a goatee, and was grieving the recent death of his revered and famous explorer brother, Elisha. Elisha had died suddenly in Havana just months earlier and had been given a hero’s treatment at home. His body lay in state at Independence Hall as the flag hung at half-mast at the U.S. Capitol. Thomas, now married and the father of two small children, was pressured firmly by his wife and father not to take up the cause of the Mormons again. Having been engrossed in family concerns after Elisha’s death, Kane had been distracted from the gravity of the situation in Utah. “When I came down upon the world again, which was in October (1857),” he wrote, “and learned the true state of affairs at that time, I was inexpressibly shocked.” The letter from Young had convinced him “beyond question that the Mormons were determined to resist our troops.”
