Swan Lake

Ballet

Swan Lake is a ballet, op. 20, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed in 1875–1876. The scenario, initially in four acts, by Vladimir Begichev and Vasiliy Geltser was fashioned from Russian folk tales as well as an ancient German legend. It tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Reisinger.

  • The prince in The Nutcracker is purely a dancing role—his interaction with the other characters is minimal—but princes such as Siegfried in Swan Lake or Florimund in Sleeping Beauty have a story to tell. In Swan Lake, I had to converse with my mother and my tutor, tell the enchanted princess Odette that I loved her, swear my love in front of a large assembly of guests, and then commit suicide by throwing myself into the lake. And I had never taken an acting lesson in my life! It took me a long time to learn to play the princely roles, but, after a lot of guidance, I finally got the hang of standing and drinking wine in the refined manner of an aristocrat. I was grateful for Ben’s support; he used to tell me, “Carlos, to me you are a prince, and that is why I am casting you in this ballet.”
