Sweet Charity

Film

Sweet Charity is a 1969 musical movie directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, written by Neil Simon, and starring Shirley MacLaine. It is based on the 1966 stage musical of the same name, which Fosse had directed and choreographed also. The movie was notable for costumes by Edith Head and its dance sequences (notably "Rich Man's Frug"). The play and the film are based on Federico Fellini's screenplay for Nights of Cabiria.

  • We opened in New York to surprisingly favorable reviews, although they were far from unanimous. Ted Kalem of Time magazine pointed out that The Star Spangled Girl, as another hit, joins Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, and Sweet Charity, making Neil Simon the first playwright since 1920 to have four Broadway shows running at the same time.” Richard Cooke of The Wall Street Journal called it “the best new comedy to come along this season.” But Walter Kerr of The New York Times said, “Neil Simon didn’t have an idea for a play this year but he wrote it anyway.” I thought that was a brilliantly written line. However, I thought he was only partly right. I did have a good idea for a play this year, but I wasn’t quite up to the one I had in mind. Still, we ran for a full season on Broadway and another season on the road.
