Vespa

Motorcycle

Vespa is an Italian line of scooters manufactured by Piaggio. The Vespa has evolved from a single model motor scooter manufactured in 1946 by Piaggio & Co. S.p.A. of Pontedera, Italy—to a full line of scooters and one of seven companies today owned by Piaggio—now Europe's largest manufacturer of two-wheeled vehicles and the world's fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer by unit sales.

  • Around the corner from my place was an excellent pizzeria, equipped with the usual woodburning oven and stocked with firewood. Outside, every evening, a host of teenagers gathered, mounted on Vespas and mopeds and surrounded by their friends and younger children. Some of the teenagers struck carefully studied poses on their saddles, preening in front of the windshields as if before a boudoir mirror, while others wove flirtatiously through the crowd, alone or in twos and threes. Apparently any number of kids could squeeze onto a moped. I saw one carrying three shrieking hussies of about thirteen cruising the alley at regular intervals, charging the boys. I saw a Vespa-borne family of four—teenage papa, mamma, and two infants, plus bulging grocery bags— sidewind nimbly through the knots of loiterers. I saw tiny tots whiz past, wedged between their papa's knees, helmetless heads uptilted, eyes dazzled by the world streaming by.
