  • Clearly, the icky overtones of the fight kept the pretty people away this time, and the locals could only fill half the hall on that late-spring Tuesday night; the closed-circuit broadcast—beamed overseas for the first time—would be the only thing that saved the promoters from taking a bath. While Cosell had no place on either the live radio (Russ Hodges and Bill Stern covered it for Mutual) or closed-circuit broadcasts, ABC purchased rebroadcast rights and would show the tape a week later, with Cosell’s real-time call, on Wide World of Sports, with Ali on hand to offer retrospective comments. As it turned out, there’d be a lot of time to fill, and a lot of explaining to do. To this day, there still is.
